Event Information
This Monday, we drift through the crowded streets and sleepless nights of Hong Kong in the early 1990s. Here, we meet two heartbroken police officers, each trying to cope with the end of a relationship in his own peculiar way. The first, grieving a girlfriend who left him on April 1, gives himself one month to wait for her, buying a daily tin of pineapples that expires on May 1—the date he has chosen to let go. Then, one night, he crosses paths with a mysterious woman in a blonde wig…
The second, abandoned by his flight-attendant girlfriend, finds himself talking to the objects in his apartment—a bar of soap, a wet towel—as he tries to cope with his loneliness, while a young woman working at a fast-food stand quietly falls for him. One day, she finds her way into his apartment…
Through two bittersweet stories of heartbreak, longing, and chance encounters, Wong Kar-wai captures the loneliness—and strange possibilities—of people crossing paths in a city where nothing stays the same for long…
👮♂️❤️🩹👩🏻✈️Chungking Express (1994)💫🌃 🇭🇰
❤️ WHAT I LOVE about this film is that, although romance is at its heart, it is not really a film about romance. Wong Kar-wai’s unique writing does not focus on relationships themselves, but instead lets us explore the transitional emotional space between what has already ended and what might begin: the lingering feelings of a past relationship, the anticipation of a new romantic possibility, and the chance encounters that briefly connect lonely people in a densely crowded city. These encounters may last only a few hours or days, but they can subtly change something inside us.
🏆 Made in just six weeks during a break from the troubled production of Ashes of Time, Chungking Express was intended by Wong Kar-wai as a small, spontaneous film—but became his international breakthrough. It won four Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Film and Best Director, and was later included in Time’s All-TIME 100 Movies.
Come and experience Wong Kar-wai’s masterpiece together!
✨ After the film, let’s engage in a friendly discussion to share thoughts, learn from each other, and make new friends!
