Event Information
Many of us here have experienced pivotal moments that led us to Ubud—moments that often begin with unexpected encounters, right?
This Friday, join us as we venture to a countryside town in Japan and meet a young man whose life takes an unexpected turn after his career as a cellist in Tokyo comes to an end. Searching for a new job, he comes across a posting for a position labeled "assisting with departures." Expecting a travel agency job, he instead discovers it's for a nōkanshi—a professional who performs a special ritual, carefully preparing the deceased before cremation. This unexpected twist sets him on a completely new path in life...
🎻✨⚰️ Departures (2008) 💐❤️ 🇯🇵
❤️ WHAT I LOVE about this film is that it's NOT heavy! It's often funny, moving, and incredibly uplifting. The traditional encoffining ritual is one of the most beautiful, graceful, and meaningful ceremonies I have ever seen! It is performed with extraordinary precision, grace, and compassion, transforming the final farewell into a deeply respectful ritual that honors the dignity of the deceased and brings comfort to the living.
Surprisingly, this is a very special ritual only performed in rural areas. Most Japanese (including myself) weren’t even aware of it until seeing it in this film! 🤯
🏆This film dominated the Japan Academy Film Prize, receiving 13 nominations and winning 10 awards. It then became the first Japanese film to win an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, earning more than 40 awards worldwide. It even sparked renewed interest in the encoffining ritual across Japan!
🔮It's beautiful and artistic, emotional and humorous, cultural and spiritual—all within ONE FILM! And there's one more special reason to join us... I have a SPECIAL GUEST visiting from Japan this Friday—my mom! 🤩
So, take a break from the ceremonies in Bali and join us this FRIDAY for a rare opportunity to experience the beauty of a traditional Japanese encoffining ritual.
✨ After the film, let’s engage in a friendly discussion to share thoughts, learn from each other, and make new friends!
