This Monday, we will take a deep cultural journey into the world of Japanese traditional art, Kabuki Theater, in one of the most celebrated Japanese films in recent history, and Japan’s highest-grossing live-action film of all time!💥
We take a journey back to 1964 Japan, where we meet Kikuo, the son of a yakuza boss whose life changes forever after a tragic incident leads him into the world of Kabuki theater. Taken in by a legendary Kabuki actor, Kikuo grows up alongside the actor’s biological son, Shunsuke, as the two dedicate their lives to mastering the demanding art of Kabuki performance, eventually training to become onnagata, male performers who specialize in playing female roles on stage.
As the years pass, admiration slowly turns into rivalry, friendship becomes tangled with jealousy, and both men begin sacrificing everything for their art. Their journey becomes a powerful story of devotion and sacrifice, family legacy versus artistry, and what it takes to become a Living National Treasure.
🎭🎎❤️🔥Kokuho (2025)🏯🗻🇯🇵
(Kokuho means “National Treasure” in Japanese.)
❤️WHAT I LOVE about this film is its authenticity! Based on the highly successful novel of the same name, the author spent 3 years working inside Kabuki theater as an assistant, carefully observing backstage culture, training systems, family structures, and performer psychology before writing the novel! 🤯 Because of this, the film was widely praised for its authenticity and deep respect for traditional Japanese art and culture!
🎭And the Kabuki performances themselves are absolutely stunning! It becomes even more incredible knowing that, in preparation for this film, the two lead actors went through 1.5 years of intensive Kabuki training under the prominent kabuki actor Nakamura Ganjiro IV, who also served as an adviser. 🤯 Their movements, posture, expressions, and performances feel astonishingly authentic throughout the entire film!
🏆Nominated for an Academy Award, holding 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, dominating the Japanese Academy Film Awards with 13 nominations and 11 wins including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Screenplay! The film also became the highest-grossing live-action Japanese film of all time! Thanks to its enormous success, ticket sales at Kabuki theaters across Japan reportedly rose by 20%!
Let’s witness this rare glimpse deep into the world of traditional Japanese art. Don’t miss this chance to watch this Japanese gem on our BIG SCREEN!
✨ After the film, let’s engage in a friendly discussion to share thoughts, learn from each other, and make new friends!
