This Monday, we’ll travel to suburban America in the late 2000s, where yoga studios, self-help books, and spiritual workshops were flourishing. Into this world walks a mysterious Indian guru with flowing robes, long hair and beard, offering cryptic wisdom about inner truth. He calls himself Kumare. His unique teachings attract followers seeking peace, meaning, and direction. But there’s one small twist — Kumare isn’t real. He’s a character invented by filmmaker Vikram Gandhi, a skeptic of spiritual leaders, who sets out to test to prove that anyone can become a spiritual leader by making himself to become a guru!
As the experiment unfolds, students begin to trust him deeply, sharing personal struggles, seeking guidance, and experiencing genuine emotional breakthroughs. What begins as a satirical performance gradually becomes something far more complicated — relationships form, lives shift, and the line between performance and authentic emotion starts to blur.
This is the story of the biggest lie he has ever told, and the greatest truth he has ever experienced.
🧔🏽♀️🙏🔮Kumare (2011) 🎥🎭🇺🇸
❤️ WHAT I LOVE about this film is that it’s both experimental and comedic! Vikram Gandhi’s performance as a fake guru is hilarious yet completely convincing. And as his teachings begin to influence his followers more and more, something inside him starts to shift. It seems like a story about a fake guru poking fun at modern spiritual culture. But it turns into something deeper, more personal, and unexpectedly moving!
🔮As we are surrounded by spiritual practices and seekers here in Ubud, this film invites us to question what spirituality really is, what faith means, and opens up wonderful possibilities for post-screening discussion.
It’s funny, thought-provoking, and surprisingly heartfelt. Don’t miss this rare chance to experience Kumare’s teachings on BIG SCREEN!
✨ After the film, let’s engage in a friendly discussion to share thoughts, learn from each other, and make new friends!
