Hello ✨ Soulbrighters ✨
This Monday, we will take a journey to a small remote village in 1990s China, where a humble school serves the local children. The village’s only teacher must leave for a month, and the mayor can find only a 13-year-old girl, Wei Minzhi, to take his place. As rural schoolchildren often drop out to pursue work due to poverty, he gives her one simple instruction: don’t lose a single student. But within days, an 11-year-old boy, Zhang Huike, leaves for the city to find work. Determined and stubborn, Minzhi sets out to bring him back. But first, she must figure out how to even get to the city… beginning a humble and deeply heartfelt journey that quietly finds its way into your heart.

❤️ WHAT I LOVE about this film is that to achieve the spirit of the story, Zhang Yimou, one of the master filmmakers of Chinese cinema, cast mostly non-professional actors whose real lives closely mirror the characters they play. They are essentially playing versions of themselves in front of the camera. Combined with its documentary-like, neorealist style using natural lighting and even hidden cameras, the film blurs the line between fiction and reality. It becomes something incredibly real, pure, humble, and deeply moving!
This is perhaps Zhang Yimou’s most stripped-down and honest film, and for me, it stands as his most powerful.
🏆 Won the Golden Lion and 3 other awards at the Venice Film Festival and 17 awards globally!
Don’t miss this chance to experience this overlooked masterpiece on our big screen! (And honestly, it’s my personal favorite among his films!)
✨ After the film, let’s engage in a friendly discussion to share thoughts, learn from each other, and make new friends!
