Event Information
This Monday, we travel to Buenos Aires—not as visitors passing through, but as souls who belong to its streets. We'll wander through its tangled corners and uneven skyline, where architecture speaks and shadows tell stories. In this city of sun-starved walls and quiet divisions, two lives drift closer than they realize, orbiting each other in a beautifully chaotic world that refuses to let them meet.
🏢👩🏻⚕️🧱 *Sidewalls (Medianeras)* (2011) 👨🏻⚕️🇦🇷💕
In this story we meet Mariana and Martín who live blocks apart in Buenos Aires, yet their paths never cross—until urban quirks and quiet coincidences begin to weave their lonely worlds together. Against a backdrop of "medianeras" (the windowless sides of buildings), we're drawn into their innermost thoughts, presented like poetry against the city's endless styles.
❤️🎬 *What Vanja loves about the film* :
First, Buenos Aires is very much a character in itself—a living, breathing entity that shapes every moment. I love how the film takes us back to the beginnings of human disconnection within the digital era, bearing witness to both the interesting, the regrettable, and the mundane.
Second, the concept of "medianeras" is brilliantly played with—these walls literally unite buildings but simultaneously divide neighborhoods, often depriving people of sunlight. The director metaphorically illustrates how such seemingly innocuous architecture can dictate so much of our lives and create unconscious barriers, especially in a digitized society.
Finally, the film's curious introspective lens—almost a testament to Buenos Aires' complicated culture and its global reputation for neuroticism (it houses the highest percentage of psychologists anywhere in the world). Makes for great conversation afterwards. ☺️
🏆🎬 Winner of the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival.
👥👥Buenos Aires may be a city of quiet disconnection, but our beanbag circle is where we bridge that gap—sharing space, thoughts, and the lingering beauty of what we've just seen. So come, settle in, and join the conversation afterward.
