This Monday, we journey to a secluded floating monastery resting upon a serene mountain lake deep within the forests of Korea, where mist drifts across still waters and the changing seasons quietly mark the passage of life. 🌫️🏞️ Here, surrounded by nature in its purest form, a young monk is raised under the guidance of an elder master, and through the unfolding of the seasons, we witness the entire arc of a human life.
🌿⛰️🪷 *Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring (2003)* 🌊🍂❄️
From innocent childhood to the turbulence of desire, from guilt and suffering to solitude, discipline, and spiritual return, the film unfolds not through dramatic dialogue, but through silence, symbolism, and observation. Each season becomes a mirror for a stage of existence — revealing the cyclical nature of life itself. 🌱🔥🍁❄️
🪷 What makes this film so profound is the way it explores the eternal human patterns we move through:
karma and consequence, desire and attachment, suffering and transformation, solitude and self-confrontation, impermanence and acceptance. It gently reminds us that every action leaves a trace, that attachment can both awaken and imprison us, and that spiritual growth is not a straight path, but a continual process of losing ourselves… and finding our way back again.
💫 What I love about the film is that it is a meditation on being human — on how we repeatedly lose ourselves in desire and suffering, and repeatedly return to awareness, humility, and compassion. It’s a spiritual poem about the rhythms of existence itself.
🎬 Visually, the film is a cinematic masterpiece of minimalist storytelling, poetic imagery, and breathtaking scenery. With no unnecessary dialogue, every frame is intentional and contemplative — from the drifting fog over the lake to the changing colors of the mountains and forests through the seasons. Nature itself becomes a teacher, reflecting the inner landscapes of the soul. 🌊🕯️🍃
🏆 The film has received widespread international acclaim, earning several awards and nominations across the world. In a 2016 international critics' poll conducted by the BBC, it was voted one of the 100 greatest motion pictures of the 21st century. In 2020, The Guardian ranked it #5 among the classics of modern South Korean Cinema. ✨
❤️🤗 After the film, we’ll gather in a cozy beanbag circle to share reflections and insights, learn from each other, and make new friends!
