Event Information
This Monday, we’ll take a journey full of soul to New York in the summer of 1969. While the legendary Woodstock Music Festival was taking place in Bethel, New York, we’ll head to Harlem, the heart of Black American culture, and discover another music festival that was almost completely forgotten: the Harlem Cultural Festival!
Although largely unknown today, this was a monumental event! Across six Sunday concerts between June 29 and August 24, the festival featured mind-blowing performances by dozens of major artists, including Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, and Sly & the Family Stone! And it was completely free, drawing more than 300,000 people! Amid the Civil Rights and Black Power movements, the festival became a powerful expression of Black pride, resilience, joy, and hope. Forgotten for more than 50 years, its remarkable footage was eventually rediscovered and transformed into an Oscar-winning documentary—a beautiful historical record of a moment when music brought an entire community together.
✊🏿🎶🖤 Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not be Televised (2021)📜✨🇺🇸
❤️ WHAT I LOVE about this film is that it’s so much more than a music documentary! Of course, you’ll see extraordinary performances exploding with SOUL, but what makes the film truly special is how it shows music transforming a concert into a powerful celebration of Black culture, community, and identity!
And more importantly, by bringing this forgotten moment back to life, the director, Questlove turns the lost footage into a powerful historical record—reminding us the power of music to connect, unite, inspire, and empower.
And then all the music is FULL OF SOUL! As we live in a time when so much popular music is driven by commercial interests, this film also reminds us that music can be so much more than entertainment!
🏆 Won the Oscar and BAFTA for Best Documentary, and a Grammy for Best Music Film, and garnered a total of 74 awards worldwide! With 99% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.0 rating on IMDb!
Don’t miss this opportunity to witness a forgotten music festival that will blow your mind!🤯🤯🤯
✨ After the film, let’s engage in a friendly discussion to share thoughts, learn from each other, and make new friends!
