This Friday, our Journey takes us to South Beach, Miami—a neon-lit world of tropical nights, salsa beats, drag clubs, and a decade-defining, laugh-out-loud comedic masterpiece.
What could possibly go wrong when a flamboyantly gay Miami couple is set to meet the ultra-conservative family their son is about to marry into?
This is the story of an unconventional Miami family, starring Robin Williams and Nathan Lane with a stellar ensemble—a cultural landmark and a humorous exposé of the mindset of the '90s.
💃🏻🌈🪩 The Birdcage (1996) 🦩🌴🍹
Armand (Williams) is the owner of The Birdcage, a prominent drag nightclub along South Beach, and Albert (Lane) is his longtime companion and star drag queen of The Birdcage. One day, Armand's son announces he will marry the daughter of an ultra-conservative anti-gay senator and that they are coming over for dinner to introduce the family. What ensues is a masterpiece in pure comedy which could've never been possible without the comedic genius of Robin Williams, the Broadway theatrics of Nathan Lane, and the stellar supporting performance of the legendary Hank Azaria (from The Simpsons).
❤️🎬 *What We Love About The Film:* How ridiculously hilarious it is! It truly is a laugh-out-loud, knee-jerker sort of '90s classic which always takes us nostalgically back to Miami, reminiscent of deliciously tropical beats and endlessly entertaining characters. We honestly cannot think of any other film like it—the brilliant comedic timing, the incredibly communicative facial expressions, the over-the-top yet endearing antics.
Ultimately, The Birdcage is a story about love, family, and acceptance which became a landmark LGBTQ+ film for the time when no other mainstream film had centered entirely on a well-adjusted, loving gay couple. We also admire how it uses humor to challenge conservative hypocrisy and prejudice against the queer community.
🏆⭐ The film garnered 7 wins and 25 nominations across various awards bodies for its brave screenplay, and was especially recognized for its incredible cast: Hank Azaria, Gene Hackman, Dianne Wiest, Dan Futterman, Calista Flockhart, and Christine Baranski.
🛋️😂 So come prepared to laugh and be heart-warmed—and don't be afraid to dress in your Miami-best… bright colors and tropical prints, and maybe even a feather boa. 😉 Stay after for a cozy discussion in the company of kindred spirits.
And for those of you who would like to continue the Miami-themed night afterwards, you are more than welcome to follow us to Plant Bistro to finish dancing the night away to Cuban salsa beats. 💃🏻
