Spanish traditions, small-town lore, and superstitions an Odyssey of deep humor and an education of the Spanish soul: this is Volver.

This Friday, our journey offers a masterclass in Spanish culture, traveling between the magical energy of Madrid and the plains of La Mancha a land of superstitions and white-washed walls where tending to tombstones is a local pastime. It is an odyssey filled with smiles and tears, where tragedy is met with the dry irony and sharp tongue that only Spain's celebrated filmmaker, Pedro Almodóvar, can truly bring to life.

👩🏻🇪🇸🪄 *Volver* (2006) 👩🏽🧑🌸

In the heart of the story is Raimunda, played by Penelope Cruz, a working-class mother in Madrid who embodies the "force of nature" archetype balancing the mundane with a mystery, serving as the bridge between the living and the dead.

❤️🎬 What I love about this film (like so many of Almodóvar’s stories) is how it showcases the warmth and communal strength of women in the face of extreme adversity. Instead of losing it in some very over-the-top situations, Almodóvar’s characters embody practicality and resilience wrapped up in the director’s signature dark humor and kitsch style.
“Volver” acquaints us more with Spanish superstitions and the magical realism of small-town lore as opposed to the previously-shown Almodóvar films which were more focused on big-city life. And of course, true to his style, a bold color palette laten with reds can be counted on as well as an Oscar-nominated ‘Best Actress’ performance by Penelope Cruz."

🏆✨The film was a massive critical success, earning over 40 awards globally and receiving dozens of nominations. It swept the major European circuits and solidified Almodóvar’s status as a global icon. In a rare and historic move, Cannes film festival awarded Best Actress to the entire female ensemble cast (Penélope Cruz, Carmen Maura, Lola Dueñas, Blanca Portillo, Yohana Cobo, and Chus Lampreave) for their collective performance,

💺👉🏽Join us for this cinematic masterpiece and a friendly discussion on how superstitions, myths, and rituals shape not only the vibrant tapestry of Spanish culture but the very rhythm of our own lives.
