Hello Soulbrighters ✨🌸
This Friday, our journey takes us to Madrid, Spain, and Rovaniemi, Finland, within the Arctic Circle. In this story of love, fate, and longing, we meet Anna and Otto, whose names are palindromes (they read the same forward and backward)—a concept the film plays with poetically, echoing its themes of symmetry, fate, and lives looping back on themselves. The film is about a love so powerful that fate itself wheels and turns at the command of our souls.
⭕👫 💞 *Lovers of the Arctic Circle* (1998) 🇪🇸🌀🇫🇮
The film follows the lives of Ana and Otto, seen across three periods of their lives. By a twist of fate, their parents fall in love, and they become step-siblings. As adolescents, their relationship intensifies during a study session over a geography book, where they first kiss while discussing the Arctic Circle, a remote region that captivates their imaginations as a destination of destiny; they soon become secret lovers whose lives seem governed by circular patterns. Julio Medem, the director, suggests that plot alone is not enough to explain a great love; faith is necessary, along with an almost mystical belief that one is destined to share life with a single chosen person.
❤️🎬 What I love about the film is not only the story, but how brilliantly the motif of circularity is woven into every layer of it—from the mirrored names and repeated journeys to the way time, memory, and fate seem to loop back on themselves, turning coincidence into something quietly inevitable. The cinematography is hushed and poetic, using natural light and carefully composed frames to mirror the film’s emotional restraint. Warm, earthy tones in Spain contrast with the pale blues and whites of Finland, turning geography into an emotional landscape of desire and distance.
🏆 💫🌟 Screened at the Venice Film Festival and the recipient of 14 awards across major European film festivals. The film is often compared with Before Sunrise, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Amélie, sharing their belief in chance encounters, emotional memory, and love shaped by unseen forces. It is a must-see for anyone drawn to poetic storytelling, quiet longing, and romances that linger long after the screen fades to black.
