Nyepi 2027 in Bali: Tuesday 9 March, and What Closes

Nyepi 2027 is Tuesday 9 March. The airport shuts for 24 hours, nobody drives, and mobile data is switched off island-wide.
Quick answer: BaliEvents currently lists 89 events in Bali, 35 of them free or guest-list entry, and Saturday is the busiest night in our listings. Festival and ceremony dates in Bali follow traditional and lunar calendars rather than fixed Gregorian ones, so this guide explains the rhythm and points you at dated listings instead of dates that shift every year.

Nyepi 2027 falls on Tuesday 9 March 2027. It runs for 24 hours, from 6am on the 9th until 6am on Wednesday 10 March. Ngurah Rai International Airport closes for the whole of it, no one drives, shops and restaurants shut, and the island goes quiet. If you are in Bali that day, you stay where you are.
The night before — Monday 8 March 2027 — is the opposite: the Ogoh-Ogoh parades, when villages carry enormous demon effigies through the streets and burn them.
Nyepi 2026 was Thursday 19 March 2026 and has already passed. The date moves every year because it follows the Balinese Saka calendar, landing on the day after the new moon of the ninth month.
What actually closes
- The airport. Ngurah Rai shuts for the full 24 hours — no arrivals, no departures. It is the only airport in the world that closes annually for a religious observance. Do not book a flight in or out on 9 March 2027.
- The roads. Nobody drives. There are no taxis, no ride-hailing, no scooters. Traditional village security — pecalang — patrol the streets and will turn you back.
- Shops, restaurants, bars, beaches. All closed. Beaches are off-limits.
- Events. Nothing runs on Nyepi, and most venues stay shut the evening before while the parades happen.
The four rules
Nyepi observes Catur Brata Penyepian, four restraints:
- Amati geni — no fire or light, which is why the island goes dark after sunset
- Amati karya — no work
- Amati lelungan — no travel
- Amati lelanguan — no entertainment or indulgence
Balinese Hindus observe these fully, with fasting and silence. Visitors are not expected to fast, but the travel and light restrictions apply to everyone on the island.
If you are a visitor
You stay in your hotel or villa. That is the whole plan. Hotels keep operating — they will feed you and the power stays on — but you cannot leave the property, and staff will ask you to keep curtains closed and noise down after dark. Many places run a restricted menu and close their beachfront.
Buy what you need on the 8th. Water, snacks, anything you would normally pop out for. Everything is shut on the day.
Expect your phone to stop working. Mobile data is suspended island-wide for the full 24 hours, along with local television and radio. Fixed-line and fibre wifi stays on for homes, hotels and essential services such as hospitals and emergency units, so your accommodation's wifi will most likely work — but your mobile signal will not. Download maps, tickets and anything else you need on the 8th.
Book the right dates. The common mistake is flying in or out on Nyepi itself. Arrive on 7 March or earlier, or from 10 March. If your flight is on the 9th, it will not go.
It is worth staying for. The sky over Bali on Nyepi night is the darkest it gets all year, with no streetlights and no traffic. A lot of people plan their trip around being here for it rather than around avoiding it.
If you host events in Bali
Do not schedule anything on 9 March 2027, and think carefully about the 8th — the Ogoh-Ogoh parades pull crowds and block roads from late afternoon, and most venues close early. The days either side are quiet too, as people travel before the shutdown and recover after it.
If you list on Balievents, the calendar will simply have nothing on it that day. Plan your March 2027 run of events around the gap rather than into it.
The days around Nyepi
- Melasti — three or four days before, villages carry temple objects to the sea to be purified. These processions are public, photogenic and worth seeing.
- Pengrupukan / Ogoh-Ogoh — the evening before, the parades and the burning of the effigies.
- Nyepi — the silence itself.
- Ngembak Geni — the day after, when the island reopens and families visit each other.

How many events like this are on in Bali right now?
The fast facts at the top of this guide carry the current count, refreshed from BaliEvents listings every week, including how many repeat weekly or daily. Open the live calendar to see the dated ones.
Do I need to book ahead?
Often not: a good share of listings are free or guest-list entry (the fast facts above give the current split), and those need nothing more than turning up on time. Ticketed events, dinners and small workshops do sell out — check the listing, since each one states whether it takes bookings.
What is the best night of the week for this in Bali?
The fast facts above name the night with the most listings right now. Midweek is quieter and usually better for meeting people; weekends are denser but busier at the door.
Is this guide kept up to date?
Yes. The listing counts above are regenerated from the BaliEvents database, and the guidance is reviewed each month. Always confirm the next occurrence on the event page before you travel across the island for it.
