Bali is one of the easiest places in the world to throw a memorable birthday and one of the easiest places to overspend doing it. The three formats that work are a beach club table, a villa party, and a proper dinner — and they suit very different groups. Decide the format first; everything else follows.
Browse live listings on BaliEvents and filter by date, area, and category.
Which birthday format suits your group?
Beach club daybed or cabana — best for 6 to 20 people who want a full day that rolls into sunset. You book a table or daybed with a minimum spend. Easy, zero setup, and the venue does everything. Most expensive per head at the good venues.
Villa party — best for 10 to 40 people and by far the best value at scale. You control music, food, timing, and the guest list. Requires real organisation and a villa that permits events.
Restaurant dinner — best for 4 to 15 people, and best when the group spans ages or you want conversation rather than volume. Book a private room or a long table.
Combination — the most common approach for a bigger group: beach club or lunch in the afternoon, dinner, then out. Keep it geographically tight or you will spend the night in traffic.
How do beach club minimum spends work?
Most Bali beach clubs sell daybeds, cabanas, and tables against a minimum spend rather than a hire fee. You commit to spending a set amount on food and drink, and that amount buys the space.
What to confirm before you book:
- The exact minimum for your date — weekends, holidays, and event nights are higher
- Whether tax and service charge count towards the minimum or sit on top. This is the most common unpleasant surprise; "++" on a menu means tax and service are added.
- The time window. Some tables are released after a set time.
- The deposit and whether it is refundable
- Whether outside cake is allowed and if there is a cakeage fee
- The guest cap for the space
Sunset slots at popular Uluwatu and Canggu venues book out weeks ahead in high season. If a specific venue matters, book early.
What do you need to know about villa parties?
Villa parties give you the most control and the most responsibility.
Check the villa actually permits events. Many explicitly prohibit parties and will evict you or charge substantial penalties. Get permission in writing, with a stated guest number and end time.
Neighbours and noise are a real issue. Bali has had genuine friction between villa parties and residential neighbourhoods, and complaints can end your night. Agree a music curfew and stick to it. Our villa events guide covers the rules and permits in detail.
What you will need to arrange: catering or a private chef, drinks and ice, a sound system, someone controlling music, and staff for setup and clearing. Most villas can arrange catering and staff, which is usually easier than sourcing separately.
Security and access. If it is a larger party, brief someone on the gate. Villa parties in Bali attract uninvited guests more than people expect.
How far ahead should you book?
- High season (July, August, December to early January) — six to eight weeks for good venues, longer for a specific sunset table
- Shoulder season — three to four weeks
- Low season — one to two weeks is often enough
- Villas for a group — three months or more in high season, because the large ones go first
Book in this order: villa or venue first, then transport, then catering, then extras. The venue determines everything else, and there is no point choosing a caterer before you know where you are.
Do not leave transport to the last minute for a group. Getting 20 people between two locations at night in Bali is the part that goes wrong.
What should you budget for a Bali birthday?
Budget by line item rather than a per-head number, because the range between formats is enormous.
- Venue — minimum spend or villa hire, usually the largest single item
- Food — per head for catering; restaurants will quote a set menu for groups
- Drinks — the most variable and most underestimated line. Decide in advance whether you are covering it.
- Cake — Bali has excellent bakeries; order several days ahead
- Decorations — cheap and widely available locally; do not ship from home
- Photographer — worth it if this is a milestone; book early for good ones
- Transport — a van and driver for the group beats individual rides
- Buffer — 15 percent, because something changes
The biggest saving available: a villa with catering instead of a beach club minimum spend, for the same group, is often dramatically cheaper.
What ruins Bali birthdays most often?
- Spreading the day across too many areas. Traffic destroys the schedule and the mood. Pick one area.
- Not confirming the minimum spend inclusive of tax and service. Budget shock at the end of a good day.
- Assuming the villa allows a party. Find out in writing.
- No plan for getting everyone home. Decide this while everyone is sober.
- Booking a sunset table without checking the actual sunset time. It shifts through the year and a 4pm booking for a 6pm sunset means a long wait.
- Rain with no backup. In wet season, always have an indoor option.
- Nobody assigned to logistics. If it is your birthday, delegate the running of it to someone else.

FAQ
How many events like this are on in Bali right now?
The fast facts at the top of this guide carry the current count, refreshed from BaliEvents listings every week, including how many repeat weekly or daily. Open the live calendar to see the dated ones.
Do I need to book ahead?
Often not: a good share of listings are free or guest-list entry (the fast facts above give the current split), and those need nothing more than turning up on time. Ticketed events, dinners and small workshops do sell out — check the listing, since each one states whether it takes bookings.
What is the best night of the week for this in Bali?
The fast facts above name the night with the most listings right now. Midweek is quieter and usually better for meeting people; weekends are denser but busier at the door.
Is this guide kept up to date?
Yes. The listing counts above are regenerated from the BaliEvents database, and the guidance is reviewed each month. Always confirm the next occurrence on the event page before you travel across the island for it.
